Crime Prevention Warning    19th, January, 2009

As the winter months continue and after a recent spate of suspicious callers visiting houses across the area, folk are being advised to protect their homes and property. Measures people can take to protect their property include: When you go out, always lock the doors and close windows. If you have deadlocks, use them. Lock doors when in your property and close windows if you are not in the room. Don’t leave spare keys outside or in a garage or shed and put them out of sight in the house. Never leave the house key near the door in an obvious place. Use timers for lights and radios if you are away from home overnight. Never leave a garage or shed unlocked, especially if it has a connecting door to the house. Lock tools and ladders away so thieves cannot use them to break in. Anyone receiving a knock at their front door should remember the Stop, Chain, Check system. - Stop and think – if you’re not expecting a caller and they don’t have an appointment – don’t let them into your home. - Chain – use the door chain before opening the front door. -Check – ask to see identification and double-check this by calling the company they are representing, before letting anyone into your home. -If in any doubt – call 999 immediately And advice is also being offered to motorists to ensure their vehicle is protected: Never leave a vehicle unattended with keys in the ignition – particularly when defrosting windows. Never leave valuables and personal possessions in a vehicle, particularly overnight. Remove the stereo if you can. Ensure all vehicle windows and doors are securely locked and that alarms or immobilisers are switched on. Keep your car keys in a safe place, even in your house, so that if someone breaks into the house they cannot steal your car too.
