Drugs

Around 4 million people use at least one illicit drug each year and around 1 million people use one of the Class A drugs (Ecstasy, Heroin and Cocaine). Many will take drugs only once, however, for around 250,000 problematic drug users in England and Wales, drugs cause considerable harm to themselves and others.

Nationally, drug misuse gives rise to between £10 billion and £18 billion a year in social and economic costs, 99% of which are accounted for by problematic drug users. Locally, almost half of all offenders over the age of 18 years who are charged with an offence of acquisitive crime (Theft, Burglary etc) have a dependency on illegal drugs and many commit crime to finance their habit.

Drug Awareness

It is important for everyone to be aware of drugs and the impact that drug misuse can have on people's lives.

There are many myths surrounding drugs. Getting the right information is essential. General advice - whether you are using drugs or not, or if you are concerned about someone else's drug use - is widely available.

Help is available locally. Agencies which provide advice and treatment include:
