What are Anti-Social Behaviour and Criminal Damage?

Anti-social behaviour covers a wide range of issues, from litter and abusive language through to criminal damage and violence.  Basically it is any kind of repeated behaviour that is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.  Examples of Criminal Damage include graffiti, vandalism and arson.  It is frequently seen as a minor crime but neglected physical environments can be unsafe, cause fear and undermine pride in the local community.  Criminal damage can also be a catalyst to other forms of anti-social behaviour and crime.

Dealing with ASB

After establishing whether the problem is anti-social behaviour, what action can be taken to address it and resolve the issue?

Firstly, if you can do so safely, try to speak to the person responsible for causing a nuisance. Remember:  be prepared to negotiate, it might be a one-off occasion or someone is going through a difficult time.  Be diplomatic.  Try not to shout, swear, or raise your voice as this may make the situation worse.  Explain why you are calling and work together to find a solution.  If they react badly and you feel uneasy, walk away.

If the anti-social behaviour persists, or you feel you cannot approach the person safely, you may need to contact a third party to help resolve the matter.  Your assistance in recording and monitoring the behaviour is crucial if any organisation is to take up the matter on your behalf.  Keep a log of all the acts of anti-social behaviour, including times, dates, and the nature of the incidents.  Organisations to contact include:

  • Your landlord, if you live in a Housing Association property (for instance Stafford & Rural Homes)
  • Stafford Borough CouncilEnvironmental Health Department if it is a persistent noise nuisance, air pollution or public health issue
  • Stafford Borough Council Street Scene, if it is a litter, graffiti or fly-tipping problem
  • Staffordshire Police
  • Community Safety Partnership – if you are unsure who to report a problem to, contact the Anti-Social Behaviour Co-ordinator.

See Directory of Services for contact telephone numbers or call the Community Safety Partnership Anti-Social Behaviour Co-ordinator on 01785 619309 for further information.
